In the Broadcast production environment, SDI (Serial Digital Interface) represents the interface with the best compromise between image quality, uncompressed lossless data and ease of using standard production and compatible equipment.

Supporting any SDI standard

An SDI monitoring system should support all SDI standards, as published by SMPTE and ITU. This allows TV operators to plug their SD-SDI or HD-SDI feeds, coming directly from professional video equipment, studio cameras, or playout systems, into the compliance logging systems. The SDI Broadcast Logger should accept very high bit rates, such as 1.485 or 2.970 Gbits/sec/feed, and up to 12 Gbps. These feeds are then encoded, on the fly, into lower bitrate and lower resolution proxies.

Significant cost savings in storage

A broadcast compliance recorder that can store the encoded feeds in low resolution proxy provides a very significant saving in storage costs. Given the legal compliance (FCC regulations) requirements of 90 days retention, if the TV operator had to store the native SDI feeds at several Gbps, then each TV service (channel) would require in the order of a Petabyte of disks, representing an investment in the order of US$ 100,000.

Using the proxy encoders, the feeds are compressed and retained in a reasonable resolution and bit-rate, in the order of Mbps (x1000 times less storage). Thus the investment in storage is reduced to a few Terabytes, and just a few hundred Dollars per channel.

Direct access to any stored Media

Embedded timecodes, or audio tracks, are automatically extracted and stored in separate files in the Media database, allowing for quick access to the Media, as well as flexibility to display any Video channel, coupled with any Audio track.

Using proxy, many functionalities become possible

Once encoded, all Media is treated exactly like any other Media obtained from IP, ASI, or Analog. The Media is accessible immediately, content analysis is performed automatically, alerts are issued in Real Time, and clips can be created with frame accuracy. Please refer to each of the Actus products for a complete overview of the available functionality on SDI feeds.

Working with SDI and encoding into Proxy is the best of both worlds

The ability to maintain a production workflow based on SDI feeds, with lossless quality, while at the same time storing just a low bitrate proxy for many months, at the lowest possible cost of storage, allows TV broadcasters and operators to benefit from the best of both worlds.
